Things to See and Do

Family Fun

There are many great places to visit with the family in the Tauranga area. The Historic Village, Lollipop’s Playland, Te Puna Quarry Park, Kiwi 360, the Vintage Auto Barn and the Comvita Visitor Centre to name a few.

A great place to go with the family at just 5 minutes from Silverbirch Holiday Park and Motel is Memorial Park. With a huge playground, mini putt, an outdoor swimming pool, many picnic spots and train rides on Sunday, this park has everything and more for a great day out with the kids.

There are some great tour operators who know all the best spots in Mount Maunganui and can take you out on some fabulous trips. There are information brochures available at our office, or we can advice you in person to find and book a trip that suits you best.

The Bay of Plenty has many more gorgeous spots for you to visit if you’d like to relax by the ocean. Papamoa Beach is also very nice and a lot less busy than the Mount.

Another stunning beach can be found at Ohope, just past Whakatane. It will take you about an hour to get to. If you head the other way you’ll get to Waihi Beach within half an hour. Both beaches and the surrounding area are well worth the drive.

Downtown Tauranga has many great shops for you to browse around in: from quality department stores and popular fashion shops to small and unique outlets with arts, crafts and collectables.

Fraser Cove is another nice place to shop. Ladies fashion, toys, furniture and things for your interior and children’s clothing. The area is being further developed for even more quality shops.

Also newly developed is the shopping centre at Gate Pa. There is a huge supermarket there, some great lunch bars and take-away places plus a number of shops that are well worth a visit.

Downtown Mount Maunganui also has great shops, especially if you are looking for unique souvenirs. And then there is Bayfair, a huge shopping mall at the Mount, open 7 days with two late nights.

The Bay of Plenty is home to 13 of New Zealand’s finest golf courses. Tauranga boasts a number of these, including a fantastic course in Greerton.

Mount Maunganui Golf Club and Omanu Golf Club are other great options in the area of Silver Birch Holiday Park and Motel to go and play a few rounds.

A bit further away you will find Te Puke Golf Club and just past Whakatane, at about an hours drive is Ohope Golf club, a popular links course with the ocean on one side and the beautiful harbour on the other.

All these golf courses welcome casual players but it is recommended to check the availability before you go. Most courses have club hire and carts available.

Also good to know is that New Zealand is renowned for very inexpensive green fees. Enjoy the beautiful park-like courses before heading back to the ‘19th hole’ for a cold one!

Going Out

Tauranga city boasts a wide variety of restaurants – many award-winning, and each serving a huge variety of cuisine, including international fare.

You’ll find waterfront bars, sensational nightclubs and an excellent café culture here. Venture a little further to find the award-winning winery Mills Reef or secluded cafes set in native bush.

Tauranga also celebrates each year with a number of festivals. Every Easter weekend, for example, the streets of Tauranga are thrown open to the people, the music and the atmosphere of the fantastic Montana Jazz Festival.

The annual Garden and Artfest is a colourful celebration of the amazing gardens and artists of the region. Mount Maunganui hosts the Brightstone Blues, Brews and BBQ’s festival every January.
