About Tauranga & the Bay of Plenty

Bay of Plenty

Some of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations can be found in the Bay of Plenty. This makes Tauranga - and Silverbirch Holiday Park & Motel - an excellent choice for a holiday base. There is plenty to see and do in the beautiful Bay and Tauranga is in the very heart of it all.

Enjoy the cosmopolitan city life or sleepy little townships, forests and national parks, kiwifruit and avocado orchards, rolling surf beaches, sumptuous cuisine and adrenalin-pumping activities.

Tauranga is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Set at the entrance of New Zealand’s most important export harbour, Tauranga offers big city lifestyle at its own pace. Tauranga is famous for the sun, sand, sea and numerous places to eat, shop, party and recover.

The purpose developed Strand offers many restaurants, cafes and bars. There is a growing range of cultural activities and some great markets, events and festivals throughout the year. Tauranga is also home to many reserves, parks and walkways. If you enjoy bushwalks or bird watching, you came to the right place.

Cruise ships often visit Tauranga and nearby Mount Maunganui and it’s a very popular place with those who love spending leisure time on the water. With its vibrant atmosphere, stunning beaches and scenery and excellent shopping and dining, it is little wonder that Tauranga city is fast becoming one of New Zealand’s most desirable destinations!

Mount Maunganui

Known for decades as New Zealand’s summer playground for visitors and locals alike, the Mount is the place to be if you like sun, sea and surf. Mount Maunganui sparkles with its white sandy beach and the enticing blue ocean. This seaside resort town draws thousands of holiday makers every summer season.

The spectacular beach reaches as far as the eye can see with lovely white sand. You’ll love the crashing surf beach on the one side and a tranquil, sheltered harbour on the other. Magnificent Mauao (Mount Maunganui) stands proud, dominating the region. There are some wonderful walkways around the base track or up to the top where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the area. Together with the many cafes, boutique shops and restaurants of world class standard, Mount Maunganui is a place that is worth visiting all year around.

Only an hour’s drive from Tauranga lies Rotorua - this magnificent city, established in the 1830’s, is on the tourist route for almost every visitor to New Zealand. Hard to miss, Rotorua’s geo-thermal activity surrounds the city with a distinct sulphuric smell and its various attractions provide easy access to bubbling mud and gushing geysers amidst stunning lake and forest landscapes.

Rotorua is one of the best places to discover the rich and sacred world of the Maori. There are villages and marae that welcome visitors, allowing them to experience the traditional Maori welcome (powhiri), savour the fantastic flavours of a genuine hangi (cooked in an earth oven) and be entertained by the passion and power of Maori song and dance.
